Creative Photography and Wales, by Paul Cabut

I have a review of Paul Cabuts’ Creative Photography and Wales: The Legacy of W. Eugene Smith in the Valleys (UWP, 2012) in this month’s Planet: The Welsh Internationalist (issue 209).

The book is very good. The context surrounding Eugene Smith’s iconic photograph Three Generations of Welsh Miners is meticulously researched, and the author also draws some interesting comparison between the American’s work and that of other photographers working in the Welsh Valleys during the 1950s, such as Geoff Charles and Robert Frank.

I was disappointed there weren’t more photos, particularly from Smith’s Welsh sojourn, though this may be an issue to do with copyright.  Nevertheless, the book makes essential reading for students of Welsh photography and visual culture.

Read my full review in Planet: The Welsh Internationalist, available to buy online or in all good bookshops (Price: £5.75).  Paul Cabuts’ Creative Photography and Wales is published by University of Wales Press and priced just under £30 in hardback.
